Shogun's Reign Roles Tier List
Ranked by early Ryō safety, roleplay value, and late-path potential—not fake DPS sheets.
This roles tier list ranks how Shogun’s Reign jobs feel to play right now: early Ryō reliability, dependency on other players, roleplay payoff, and how cleanly each job feeds housing or long progression. It is an opinionated wiki tool, not an official balance patch note. Exact pay rates remain not fully documented publicly, so tiers emphasize loop quality over invented coins-per-hour.
Use it beside Getting Started, the deep guides for Farmer, Merchant, and service roles, plus the role checklist.
Ranking criteria
- S — Best default recommendation for most new players in that category.
- A — Excellent when you understand the loop or the server is populated.
- B — Strong niche or alt-play; may need hybrid income.
- C — Fun or prestigious, but weak as a solo early economy.
- Situational — Depends on badges, politics, or sparse public rules.
We rank roles and path fantasies, not species. Ancestry picks like Ryūjin belong on species.
Early economy tier
S — Farmer
Clearest on-ramp. Fields teach Province pacing without stock risk. Funds everything else. Full write-up: Farmer role.
A — Merchant
Higher ceiling once you can buy turnips/cabbage style goods and run a stall. Punishes empty pockets. Guide: Merchant role.
A — Attendant
Laundry, footwear, bathhouse service stay useful whenever people inhabit hospitality spaces. More social than Farmer; less inventory stress than Merchant. Covered in service roles.
B — Performer
Brilliant for visibility and the Instrument Master badge, but tips and attention swing with population. Keep a Farmer backup.
B — Isha
Physician-coded care is high RP value, mid economic certainty. Pair with Attendant manners or Farmer hours.
Roleplay impact tier
S — Attendant
Teaches etiquette every shift; elevates the whole server’s tone.
S — Isha
Creates aftermath and care scenes other combat/warrior fantasies need.
A — Performer
Turns plazas into stages; perfect songs become local legend.
A — Merchant
Stall banter and supply stories glue Farmers to buyers.
B — Farmer
Honest and grounding; quieter unless you narrate seasons and neighbor ties.
Progression / prestige synergy tier
Paths players discuss: farmer → artisan → merchant → retainer → warrior → noble → Shogun. Mapping roles onto that ladder:
S — Merchant & Farmer foundations
Without Ryō and work ethic, retainer/noble costumes ring hollow.
A — Attendant / Isha soft power
Service credibility supports retainer loyalty stories and noble hospitality.
A — Performer reputation
Culture flex helps noble courts and festival patronage scenes.
Situational — Warrior / retainer / noble fantasies
These are progression identities more than starter jobs. Their “tier” rises only after economy and housing exist. Appointment into The Shogunate, survival of revolts (Reign’s End), or embracing Ambitionless sits above any single early role—see progression.
Situational — Shogun itself
Not an early pick. Treat as endgame narrative, not a tier you queue on day one.
Hybrid grades (what veterans actually do)
| Hybrid | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Farmer + Merchant | S | Seed capital → stall scaling |
| Farmer + Attendant | A | Money + manners |
| Merchant + Performer | A | Market-day energy |
| Attendant + Isha | A | Full care suite |
| Performer solo early | C | Fun, fragile wallet |
| Noble cosplay solo early | C | Style without substance |

What would move the tiers
Public patch notes that publish pay tables, craft recipes for artisan, or clearer Shogun appointment steps would reshuffle this list. Until then, distrust anyone selling certainty—especially unverified codes or scripts. Watch @shoguns.reign and Updates.
How to use this list in one evening
- If broke → Farmer (S economy).
- If social → Attendant (S RP) with Farmer backup.
- If you have seed Ryō → Merchant (A economy).
- If chasing Instrument Master → Performer blocks after bills are paid.
- If chasing housing → any S/A economy role until surplus exists.
- If chasing Shogun → read progression, not this list alone.

Tiers are compasses, not cages. A “B” Performer main who loves the craft will out-enjoy an optimized Farmer who hates dirt—and Shogun’s Reign is built for that kind of sincere Province life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best role for beginners?
Farmer ranks S for early Ryō safety. Add Attendant if you want social RP, or Merchant once you have seed capital.
Why isn't Shogun S tier?
Shogun is an endgame appointment fantasy marked by The Shogunate badge, not a starter job you pick in the Hub.
Is Merchant better than Farmer?
Merchant can scale faster with good stock control, but Farmer is safer when you start with almost no Ryō. Many players hybridize.
Where do Attendant, Isha, and Performer rank?
Attendant is A for economy and S for RP. Isha and Performer sit around B for solo money but score high for scenes and badges like Instrument Master.
Will this tier list change?
Yes when public pay data, population patterns, or progression rules become clearer. Check Updates and rethink hybrids after major patches.
